Bengawan Solo at Plaza Singapura represents one of Singapore's most cherished culinary institutions, beautifully positioned at Level B2 (unit #B2-59) of this iconic Orchard Road shopping destination. Founded in 1979 by Mrs. Anastasia Liew as "a small neighbourhood corner store on the east coast of Singapore," Bengawan Solo has evolved into a household name synonymous with traditional cakes and kueh made using the highest quality ingredients and time-honoured methods of preparation. Operating daily from 10am to 9pm, this beloved bakery continues the legacy of lovingly preparing cakes, kueh (traditional local confectionery), and other sweet confections that have become integral to Singapore's cultural and culinary landscape. The Plaza Singapura location serves as a showcase for the brand's commitment to preserving traditional Indonesian and Singaporean delicacies while making them accessible to both locals and international visitors exploring authentic Southeast Asian flavours.
The extensive traditional offerings at Bengawan Solo Plaza Singapura feature an impressive selection of more than 20 varieties of handcrafted kueh, including the famous Kueh Lapis, Lapis Sagu, and Ondeh-Ondeh that are meticulously prepared daily using traditional methods passed down through generations. The signature cake collection showcases the renowned Pandan Chiffon Cake, which CNN recognized as "Singapore's National Cake" in 2017, alongside beloved classics like Prune Lapis, Cranberry Lapis, Orange Chiffon, and Pandan Cheese Roll. Their celebrated Pineapple Tarts and Premium Pineapple Tarts represent the pinnacle of traditional craftsmanship, while specialty items like Macadamia Sugee Cookies and Kueh Bangkit (Coconut Cookies) demonstrate the bakery's commitment to preserving authentic recipes and techniques. Each product reflects Bengawan Solo's dedication to using only the finest quality ingredients without preservatives, with all items freshly prepared at their central Woodlands bakery and delivered to outlets 2-3 times daily to ensure optimal freshness and quality.
What sets Bengawan Solo Plaza Singapura apart from contemporary bakeries is their unwavering commitment to authenticity and cultural preservation, maintaining traditional production methods that honor the heritage and artistry of Southeast Asian confectionery while adapting to modern quality standards and customer expectations. The experienced team understands that these traditional treats often carry deep cultural significance and childhood memories, approaching each recipe with the respect and care it deserves. The convenient Plaza Singapura location makes these beloved traditional delicacies accessible to the diverse community of shoppers, office workers, and tourists who frequent Orchard Road, while the bakery's reputation for consistency and quality has made it a trusted choice for special occasions, festive celebrations, and everyday indulgences. This combination of cultural authenticity, superior quality, traditional craftsmanship, and convenient accessibility has established Bengawan Solo Plaza Singapura as more than just a bakery – it's a cultural ambassador that continues Mrs. Liew's original vision of sharing the sweet traditions of Singapore and Indonesia with each new generation of customers who discover the timeless appeal of expertly crafted traditional confections.
The waiter's attitude was terrible! I told her I wanted this pastry, but she didn't even look at it! She gave me the wrong one! She also blamed me for my fault! I was speechless. My good mood was ruined! If you are in a bad mood, don't come out to work. The customer didn't offend you!

I love their cookies. This shop in particular is a bit tiny though and has very little variety. We’ll, maybe it caters to the surrounding areas’ demand. In general their snacks are good. All in all, this particular shop is just ok.

Consistent experience with other reviewers, customer service is non existent the staff looked look she's in a bad mood. Well just here to buy kuehs so it's fine but it wasn't a good experience. Tried egg tarts, sagu melaka, kueh dadar, kueh salat, angku kueh.

The lady that served on 25 July around 730pm seems uninterested in her job. Felt like I’ve interrupted her phone game. Banana cake was cold and hard. Food is bad at least work on customer service to compensate? 😓

I agreed with others that her products are good esp. Pandan Chiffon. However, I had met one lady staff twice and she gave me an attitude! I do nothing wrong but what's going on?

I like the cakes and kuehs at Bengawan Solo. They are good but the customer service at this outlet is lousy. I went down to this outlet with my mother planning to buy a few boxes of walnut cakes to distribute for relatives together with wedding invitation. However, the 2 staffs present were totally unfriendly and unhelpful. The walnut cake was packed in a plastic container which is not that presentable. We asked if they could pack them individually in boxes since we are buying quite a number for wedding. Unfortunately, they gave us the attitude "no don't have...take it or leave it". All these while packing their kuehs. Didn't even bother to give us full attention. We were very disappointed.
Anyway, we went down to the Bengawan Solo at Tiong Bahru and the customer service was 100% excellent! The staff told us actually they have wedding cake boxes for the walnut cake at no extra charges and she was so friendly. She packed them so nicely for us. Totally different from the unhelpful staffs at Plaza Singapura.
We would avoid the Bengawan Solo at Plaza Singapura as long as that two female staffs are working there!
*posted a photo of the walnut cake nicely packed in a wedding box by the Tiong Bahru staff to show that they indeed have this box.

It’s puzzling how ALL the female service staff at the PS outlet always seem to be in a bad mood. Zero greeting, zero response except for taking the pastry (no joke), zero thank you said—every single time, for every single female staff (I see different ppl on different days). My mum loves the pastries, otherwise I wouldn’t have bought them. Once in a blue moon, there will be a male staff who’s the only one who greets ppl and says thank you. My hubby even avoids buying the pastries when he sees any of the female staff!!! To the mgt members, please counsel your staff if possible - this has been happening for the last 6 years after I moved into dhoby ghaut. But today, I have finally decided to provide the required feedback. The service is really terrible.

Would like to comment on the customer service at this outlet. In Dec n Jan I frequented this outlet. Dec - a staff picked up my call n was very nice, helped me to reserve the cookies which I went down promptly to collect on the same day. In Jan 2023, on a Monday night 840pm, this staff told me we are closed at 830pm, if i wan to buy, I have to pay cash. Today I went again at 835pm, 2 staff were there. There was 1 staff who is not dressed in work clothes, I approached for help, she is unfriendly, asked me to refer to the display cookies myself. When I was choosing and deciding, I can see her popping her head out to check on me = totally giving me the impression that they want to close shop early. Food is great but customer service not so.

Very rude staff, outlet was not busy I was the only customer at that time and she was busy on her handphone, placed my order and she sulked at having to “serve a customer”, also, she threw the change on the counter..and returned to her handphone.

6pm today, the lady staff keep playing on phone and ignores the customer . This is not first time I am here and encounter at least 3 times within 3mths… 👎🏻

Worst customer service. The staff is being so rude and not friendly. No smiling on the face. Even my friends who when this outlet also told me the same thing. Customer service is important. That is the first key of customer's will look at. Please practice to smile and be polite.

Kheng kheng gave excellent service in helping me select what I needed to buy for my sisters. Helped to mark the boxes so that I don't get mixed up.

They're located at the basement level, right by the escalator. It's just a food stand where you can buy and go, not a place you can sit down. Got myself some kueh as snacks (Ang ku kueh, lapis sagu, and their pandan cheese cake), took them away, and left quickly after. Don't expect any service from the staff, and you wouldn't be disappointed.
